Alloy Polymers Taps Charles Chiappone as President and COO

November 2006

Alloy Polymers, Inc., celebrated its 25 th anniversary by hiring a new president and chief operating officer. Charles M. Chiappone recently assumed day-to-day decision-making responsibilities from company founder Subhash Pahuja, who remains the chief executive officer.

"My agenda in the next several months is to learn as much as I can about the business from our associates, our customers, and our suppliers," Chiappone says. "Because of Alloy's past success and great reputation, I don't foresee making major changes. I plan to build on the foundation already here to ensure our future is as successful as our past."

The new COO comes to Alloy Polymers with a comprehensive background in plastics and silicones. Most recently the vice president and general manager of SPX Cooling Technologies, Chiappone spent 14-plus years in operations, sales, marketing and customer service positions at General Electric, primarily in GE Plastics.

"Charlie's background is very well suited to take Alloy Polymers to the next step," says outgoing president Pahuja. "Right now, we're in the early stages of our growth. As a professionally managed company, we have the potential to be the best in class, and we fully expect to achieve that."

Pahuja, who was named Virginia's Entrepreneur of the Year in 2000, purchased the firm in 1982 and moved its headquarters to Richmond, Virginia, in 1987, focusing on compounding of engineering plastics. The company, which has returned a profit in 24 of its 25 years, currently employs 250 associates and operates facilities in three locations.

In 2006, Alloy Polymers acquired a 100-million-pound compounding plant in Crockett, Texas, which jumpstarted the company's participation in the wire and cable market. In 2002, after acquiring a 110-million pound polypropylene compounding facility in Ghanna, Ohio, the company assumed a prominent position in the PP automotive market.

Chiappone, who has an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, expresses enthusiasm about being back in the industry that launched his career. "I have a lot of passion for this industry," he says. "I'm looking forward to developing a strong rapport with our customers, suppliers, and associates."

He attributes his past success at GE and SPX to his concentration on four facets of leadership: people, processes, relationships, and results. He foresees dividing his time among these areas to ensure the company continues to deliver the services that are important to customers. "At the end of the day, what we sell is a service," Chiappone says. "By listening to customers, we can position Alloy to be a world-class supplier."
